Tram shutdown, Nov. 22 to 27

The Portland Aerial Tram will shut down Tuesday, Nov. 22 after 7 p.m. for scheduled replacement of its haul rope. It will resume operation Monday, Nov. 28 after the Thanksgiving holiday. During the shutdown, shuttle buses will run between the Center for Health & Healing and the Kohler Pavilion roundabout.

The tram folks apologize for the inconvenience, but the haul rope is pretty crucial. Next time you’re at a tram terminal, look up: For each cabin, you’ll see two cable “tracks” with the moving haul rope between them. It’s what pulls the cabins along and while it’s maintained regularly when the tram is closed on nights and weekends (which is what prevents the tram from being able to run 24/7), it’s time for a replacement.

The haul rope was last replaced in 2010. After more than 21,800 hours and 325,000 trips (on what is apparently the most frequently used tram line in the world), the haul rope is near the end of its useful life and will be replaced.

How will this impact me?

Even though shuttles will be available during the tram’s normal hours, with more running during peak times (7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m.), please plan to add as much as 30 minutes to your time in transit. If possible, avoid scheduling meetings and appointments on the hill and at the waterfront on the same days.

  • The tram elevator at the upper platform will be closed during the project.
  • Go By Bike will move to the Whitaker lot with temporary fencing from Friday, Nov. 18 until Tuesday, Nov. 22.
  • The shuttles will be ADA accessible.

The shuttles will begin running at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 22 and will match the tram’s normally available hours during the shutdown.
